The engineering behind strong shells, solid steel, and pools built to spec.

What Actually Holds a Henderson Pool Together

July 1, 2026

Steel rebar cage before a gunite pool shell is shot

Most pool shopping happens at the surface: the tile color, the deck stone, the shape on the rendering. Those choices matter, but they sit on top of the parts that actually decide whether your pool holds up in Henderson soil. If you understand a few structural details, you can read a bid far better and spot the corners a low price is cutting. Here is where the real money and the real durability live.

The Steel Is the Skeleton

On a gunite pool, the shell is only as strong as the rebar cage inside it. Look for #3 and #4 grade 60 steel tied on a tight grid, not a loose lattice thrown in to satisfy a photo. The cage carries the loads that caliche soil and thermal swings put on the shell for the next thirty years. A bid that is vague about steel size and spacing is a bid hiding its cheapest decision.

The Shell Has to Cure, Not Just Set

Pneumatically applied gunite has to be shot at the right consistency and then kept damp while it cures. Cure time between stages is not a delay to rush past, it is the window where the concrete gains most of its strength. If a builder promises to go from shooting the shell to tile in a couple of days, ask why. Our gunite pool builds move stage by stage for exactly this reason.

The Bonding Grid Is Invisible and Required

Around every pool, the NEC 680.26 equipotential bonding grid ties the shell, steel, deck, and equipment together with 8 AWG solid copper. It keeps a swimmer from ever feeling a stray voltage, and it is code, not an upgrade. You cannot see it once the deck is poured, which is exactly why it gets skipped on cut-rate jobs. Ask to see it on the plan.

Drain Covers Are a Safety Line, Not a Detail

ANSI/PHTA/ICC-7 anti-entrapment main drain covers exist because of the suction hazard the Virginia Graeme Baker Act was written to end. They are inexpensive and non-negotiable. A builder who treats them as optional is telling you how they treat the rest of the safety scope.

Match the Build Type to the Plan

Gunite, fiberglass, and vinyl-liner pools each carry their loads differently, and the right choice depends on your lot, your budget, and how you want to swim. There is no single best system, only the best fit for your yard near Green Valley Parkway. If a bid pushes one type without asking about your site, that is a flag.

Cldengineers provides pool builders in Henderson, NV, and we treat every project as a structure first and a water feature second. We build custom gunite pools, install one-piece fiberglass shells, set vinyl-liner pools, integrate attached spas, pour surrounding decks, wire pump and automation packages, and add saltwater chlorination. Homeowners across Green Valley Ranch, Anthem, and the streets off Green Valley Parkway in the 89011 ZIP call us when they want a pool that is drawn on paper before a single yard of dirt moves.

A pool is a concrete tank buried in your yard, so the engineering underneath the surface matters more than the tile you see. On a gunite build we tie a rebar cage from #3 and #4 grade 60 steel, then a crew shoots the shell in pneumatically applied gunite so the concrete cures into one monolithic form. Fiberglass shells ride on a compacted gravel base that has to be dead level, and vinyl-liner pools stand on steel or polymer wall panels footed in concrete. Each type fails in a different way when the substructure is rushed, and each one is our specialty.

The desert around Henderson adds its own demands. Caliche soil, summer heat that pushes past 100 degrees, and hard fill water all shape how we plumb, backfill, and finish a pool near Seven Hills or Inspirada. We size Schedule 40 PVC circulation loops for real flow, set variable-speed pumps that meet the July 2021 Department of Energy rule, and lay the NEC 680.26 equipotential bonding grid in 8 AWG solid copper so the deck, shell, and steel all sit at one voltage. That last detail is invisible, and it is also code, safety, and the mark of a builder who reads the standard.

Finish choices are where the plan becomes yours. White plaster is the value option and lasts five to ten years, while quartz and pebble aggregate interiors run longer at fifteen to twenty-five years and shrug off the mineral load in valley water. Waterline mosaic tile, travertine coping, and a stamped or paver deck tie the whole build together around your MacDonald Ranch or Cadence lot. We walk you through every layer, put the number in writing, and build to the drawing so the pool that comes out of the ground matches the one we promised.

  1. Structure before surfaceWe engineer the rebar cage, footing, and bonding grid first, because that is what holds a pool for decades.
  2. Three build types, one crewGunite, fiberglass, and vinyl-liner pools each get a builder who knows how that specific system behaves in caliche soil.
  3. Code-correct plumbing and wiringVariable-speed pumps, ANSI/PHTA/ICC-7 drain covers, and an 8 AWG copper bonding grid to NEC 680.26 on every job.
  4. Written scope, no surprisesYou get a drawing and an itemized price before excavation, and we build the pool we drew.

Comparing Pool Types for Henderson Yards

Three ways to build an in-ground pool, each engineered for the site, the budget, and how you want to swim.

01Custom Gunite Pool Construction
A steel rebar cage shot with pneumatically applied gunite lets us build any shape, depth, vanishing edge, or tanning ledge you draw. The most durable and most customizable build.
02Fiberglass Pool Installation
A factory-molded one-piece shell with a nonporous gelcoat surface, set on compacted gravel and finished with coping and deck. No plaster and the fastest install of the three.
03Vinyl-Liner Pool Installation
Steel or polymer wall panels on a concrete footing with a troweled floor and a custom-fit membrane liner. The lowest first cost, with a liner swap every seven to twelve years.
04Spa and Hot Tub Integration
An attached raised spa that shares the pool structure, with its own heater, blower, and jets, spilling over a raised bond beam back into the main pool.
05Decking, Coping, and Hardscape
Travertine, porcelain paver, and stamped concrete decks set to drain, tied into the equipotential bonding grid that NEC 680.26 requires around the shell.
06Equipment, Automation, and Saltwater
Variable-speed pumps, cartridge filters, heaters, and salt chlorine generators wired to a smart controller you run from a phone app.

Technical Pool Questions, Answered

What is the difference between gunite, fiberglass, and vinyl-liner pools?
Gunite is a sprayed concrete shell over a steel rebar cage, so it can be any shape or depth and lasts the longest. Fiberglass is a one-piece molded shell with a smooth gelcoat that needs no plaster and installs fastest. Vinyl-liner uses wall panels and a membrane liner for the lowest first cost, with the liner replaced every seven to twelve years.
How much does it cost to build an in-ground pool in Henderson?
Vinyl-liner pools run about $35,000 to $65,000, fiberglass packages land near $45,000 to $85,000, and custom gunite pools range from $60,000 to well past $150,000 with vanishing edges and premium stone. We give a firm written number after a free on-site design consult.
How long does it take to build a pool from start to finish?
A fiberglass shell can be swimmable in a few weeks once the site is prepped. A custom gunite build runs longer because it moves through excavation, steel, plumbing, shooting the shell, tile and coping, deck, interior finish, and startup, with cure time between stages. We give you a stage-by-stage schedule up front.
Do I need a permit and a safety fence to build a pool?
Yes to both. Clark County requires a permit and inspections, and the code calls for an isolation barrier at least 48 inches high with a self-closing, self-latching gate that opens away from the water. We pull the permit, build to the barrier code, and schedule every inspection for you.
Is a saltwater pool better than a traditional chlorine pool?
A salt chlorine generator makes chlorine on demand by electrolysis, so the water feels softer and the sanitizer level stays steadier than hand-dosing. You still run chlorine, just generated inline after the filter and heater. The salt cell is replaced roughly every three to seven years.
Why does the bonding grid and drain cover matter so much?
The NEC 680.26 equipotential bonding grid ties the shell, deck, steel, and equipment together with 8 AWG solid copper so nothing carries a stray voltage a swimmer could feel. ANSI/PHTA/ICC-7 anti-entrapment main drain covers stop the suction hazard the Virginia Graeme Baker Act was written to prevent. Both are code, and both are non-negotiable on our builds.

What Each Pool Build Costs

Build cost tracks the type of pool, the size of the shell, and the finish you choose. Vinyl-liner is the lowest first cost, fiberglass sits in the middle with no plaster to maintain, and custom gunite spans the widest range once vanishing edges, tanning ledges, and premium stone decks enter the drawing. The ranges below are typical for the Henderson area, and we put the firm number in writing after a free on-site design consult.
