CLIENT'S OBJECTIVES
Replacement of a posted bridge creating an important link to Kittery Point. The design was sensitive to environmental concerns in this coastal location.
THE FACTS
The Kittery Point Bridge is located on Route 103 over Spruce Creek in Portsmouth Harbor, which is a harsh marine environment with tidal effects. The existing bridge timber pile substructure had undergone emergency repairs by the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) due to severe deterioration from marine organisms when the project was scheduled for replacement. Access for emergency equipment and school buses were a concern for any further downposting. In addition, the existing bridge did not provide adequate clearance for small watercrafts.
THE RESULTS
CLD completed the preliminary design for the project, which included complex geometric design, hydraulic analyses, roadway widening and realignment, traffic control, public participation, and structural alternatives studies. A raise in profile grade and reduction in the number of piers provided an adequate opening to pass flood flows and for vessel navigation. Maintenance of traffic through the project area was of significant importance, so the design incorporated phased substructure and superstructure construction. Minimization of impacts to coastal wetlands required the use of long retaining walls subjected to tidal flows. The Department completed final design, and the project was constructed in 1998.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Environmental Consensus Building With Resource Agencies
- Complete Bridge and Retaining Wall Alternative Studies
- Complex Tidal Hydraulics and Scour Analysis
- Project Completed in Metric Units
