Construction Administration Completed for Crystal Lake
CLD Consulting Engineers, Inc. of Manchester announces completion of construction administration services for the Crystal Lake Sewerage System (Phase I). Crystal Lake is a 21-acre lake in the southeastern quadrant of Manchester, very close to I-93. Because the lake is located in a small watershed area with no infeeding streams, it was very vulnerable to adverse environmental influences. Many small homes and a very popular City park and swimming area are located on the west side of the lake and Melody Pines Day Camp is located on the opposite shore. Like many NH lakes, most of the area homes were constructed many years ago as summer camps. In recent years the camps have been expanded/ converted for year round use. The result was that the area ended up with many three-bedroom homes on postage stamp lots with on-site septic systems. This intense land use, the high groundwater in the area and the age of many of the septic systems was a severe environmental threat to the lake.
The City of Manchester Highway Department, Environmental Protection Division took action to guard against that treat and to protect this valuable resource. The Department secured revolving loan funds from the State of New Hampshire, commissioned the design and contracted for construction of a system to collect the wastewater discharge from the homes in the area for treatment at the city's wastewater treatment plant. The project included the installation of over 15,000 linear feet of 8-, 10-, 12-, and 15-inch gravity sewer pipe, two thousand feet of 8-inch force main and a pump station. Mr. David W. Gates, PE of CLD was the on-site representative for the City/State and resident engineer for the project. Mr. Gates stated that "Given the close proximity of homes and the narrow streets of these neighborhoods, installing the sewer lines was like threading a needle". The streets of the neighborhood have all been repaved and the disturbed lawn and landscape areas around the homes have all been restored. This project assures that Crystal Lake will remain clean and healthy for swimming and recreation well into the future.
