"Engineering Goes Public" at Steeplegate Mall

From February 15th through February 20th, 2001, the Steeplegate Mall in Concord will host the "2001 National Engineers Week" display during mall hours.  The event is free and open to the public as part of New Hampshire's National Engineers Week 2001 celebration.  Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Engineers Week is celebrated annually by thousands of engineers, engineering students, teachers and leaders in government and business to raise public awareness and appreciation of engineers and their work.

The highlight of this year's event will include several static robotic displays that are being made available by the local high school system as sponsored by Dean Kamen's U.S. FIRST Program.  Dean Kamen will also be this year's keynote speaker at the banquet culminating the week on February 21st.  The mall display will also consist of booths and display materials such as posters or photographs of local engineering projects, design plans, magazines and newsletters and is intended to be an awareness campaign for engineering in general.  At the mall, the public will have the opportunity to view slide show presentations and computer simulations for various engineering applications.  Engineers will sponsor special exhibits including product and applications demonstrations as well as hands-on activities for families.  Engineering-related information such as local college programs and professional associations will also be available for distribution to the public.

Roch D. Larochelle, P.E., an engineer at CLD Consulting Engineers, Inc. in Manchester, is the coordinator of this year's event.  He believes that "engineers week is a time to reach out to our local community to educate and inspire students and adults alike to the wonders of an engineering career."  This event gives engineers a chance to make the public aware of the positive contributions engineers make to their communities, this nation, and to the world.

The Steeplegate Mall display is sponsored by the NH Society of Professional Engineers, the NH Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the UNH ASCE Student Chapter.  For more information, visit the following websites: www.eweek.org, www.nspe.org, www.nhspe.org.
