January 31, 2001 Manchester, NH Towns of Derry and Londonderry Continue Exit 4A Project The Towns of Derry and Londonderry, in conjunction with their environmental and engineering design consultant CLD Consulting Engineers, Inc., recently held two Public Informational Meetings to update the public on the project status and to solicit input on four remaining "off NH Route 102" alignment alternatives. The meetings were well attended and several people spoke both for and against specific alternatives and other aspects of the project. 
The purpose of this project is to both relieve traffic problems on NH Route 102 in Downtown Derry (Broadway) by providing an alternate route for "through traffic," and to promote development in Derry and Londonderry, which will enhance the tax bases of each community. It is likely that the selected alternative will include a new full-access interchange on Interstate 93 between Exits 4 and 5. This interchange would not have any connection to the west as part of this project.The next step in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) process will be to obtain a determination from the Federal Highway Administration as to whether it is appropriate to reduce the number of alternatives at this time, or carry all four off-alignment alternatives through the detailed study portion of the EIS process. Once this determination is made, the detailed evaluation will provide data that will lead to the selection of the "preferred alternative," the Draft EIS Report will be published and another Public Informational Meeting will be held, followed by a formal Public Hearing. At the hearing, the "preferred alternative" will be presented in detail for review and comment. Following the hearing, the Final EIS Report will be developed. With a successful EIS in place by the winter of 2001/2002, construction would be projected to begin in the spring of 2004. |
