CLD Sponsors Breakfast Forum on the Riverwalk

CLD Consulting Engineers, Inc. recently sponsored a Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Forum at the Wayfarer Inn in Bedford.  Project Manager Tom Sommers, P.E., Senior Vice President at CLD, spoke about the Riverwalk project as well as the proposed completion of additional ramps from the north at the Granite Street interchange to complete Downtown access.

Mr. Sommers reviewed the vision of a two-mile long Riverwalk to promote economic growth, prosperity, civic pride and development along Manchester's waterfront.  This is a very exciting project that will take over ten years to complete, but is expected to produce numerous development opportunities.  Possibilities include venues for outdoor cafe-style dining, riverfront shoppe entries, artisan display areas, and others.  Overall, the project has great potential to become a destination "place" that will be the core of civic presentation and pride.

The project has been programmed into five phases related to distinctive areas along the river.  Phase I is partially complete and construction advances toward completion in the spring.  A portion of Phase III along the Gateway Buildings is currently under design and is hoped to be let for construction in 2001.

The Riverwalk will be highly visible both north- and southbound on I-293 and is expected to call out an invitation to tourists to visit the Downtown and Millyard areas.  This will provide better opportunity to the City of Manchester to increase tourism, commercial development and recreation.  Additionally, Sommers also mentioned the "Hands Across the Merrimack" project, which is an effort to raise funds to transform the railroad trestle that spans the Merrimack River into a pedestrian bridge that would link the east side Riverwalk pedestrian and bicycle paths on the west side.  When completed, the visual statement created by this gateway-type project is exciting to imagine.

A recognition ceremony, hosted by Mayor Robert Baines, was held recently at Margarita's Restaurant to honor businesses who donated to the project through the Riverwalk Tax Credit Fund.  A total of $300,000 was raised.  These monies are targeted for that section of the Riverwalk from the Granite Street Bridge to just south of the Waumbec Mill.
