Dover Transportation Enhancements
| Project 3 - Dover Point Road Shoulders & City-Wide Bicycle Amenities
The Dover Citywide Bicycle Improvements project serves to increase the use of alternative modes of transportation by making it easier and safer to bike to and around the downtown destination area. Downtown is a destination for work, shopping, errands, medical needs, offices, and restaurants. Additionally, Downtown is a hub for different transportation choices such as buses, cabs, walking, and the train. It is a three-component project consisting of:
- Installation of bicycle storage lockers at four central parking facilities in the downtown area.
- Procurement and installation of special educational traffic calming bicycle route signs on major bicycle routes within the Urban Compact Zone.
- Bicycle route signs and repainting the pavement markings to change the lane widths and improve the shoulder widths on Dover Point Road. This project will be done in conjunction with a pavement overlay by NHDOT of a portion of Dover Point Road.
The Seacoast Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) systems regional network identifies Dover as a major segment in the bicycle corridors that connect major population and activity centers. The primary southern route is the Dover/Newington/Portsmouth corridor, which follows Dover Point Road to the multi-use paved trail from Hilton Park and over Great Bay using the Old General Sullivan Bridge.
